MEMORIAL DAY 2021
During all of May, we will be honoring those who died defending our freedom. But, there are changes. Some traditional elements, unfortunately, have been put on pause. We will do as many traditional things as possible. We have added a Poppy Coloring Contest. We invite you to participate in as many things as you can and we look forward to when we can again join together to have a full ceremony at the Churchville Elementary School and the cemetery, as well as a parade.
Here's what we are doing. Go to the tabs on this website, or our Facebook page for more details.
1) Poppy Distribution. As always, throughout May, poppies which symbolize the sacrifices of those who died defending our freedom, will be distributed in exchange for donations. This is our largest fundraiser and 100% of funds raised are used to support veterans programs, such as the VA in Batavia, Eagle Star Transition Home, etc. Distribution will be: (a) in person at local establishements, (b) via collection cans at local establishments, and (c) virtually through this website.
2) Poppy Coloring Contest. NEW THIS YEAR !!! Coloring pages and forms can be downloaded from the website or Facebook or picked up at the Newman Riga Library. In addition to having fun, young patriots will learn more about the meaning of poppies and Memorial Day. Coloring books are available at the library for everyone who enters.
3) Flags for Veterans in Cemeteries. As always, over 500 flags will be placed on the graves of veterans in RIga Cemetery, Creekside Cemetery and St. Vincent's Cemetery. If you notice that, on Memorial Day, a flag is missing from a veteran's grave, go to the Cemeteries Database tab, or go on Facebook, to download a form to send us so that this hero can be added to our flag list.
4) Memorial Day Events and Activities. Still occurring but modified. Traditional ceremonies at the school, Creekside Cemetery, as well at the parade, have regrettably been put on pause. Go to the Memorial Day tab and download the suggestions for how you can honor those who gave their lives for future generations of Americans. There are many opportunities to choose from.

BIRTHDAY GREETINGS FOR VETERANS
Harvey C. Noone Legion Family has launched this new program, in partnership with the Newman Riga Library. It grew out our "Valentines for Veterans" program, where our community donated 1,272 Valentines for the Veterans at the Batavia VA. We decided to expand the program to ensure no veteran at the Batavia VA has a birthday without receiving Birthday Greetings !!!
Signed birthday cards - whether homemade by children, custom made by talented adults, or store bought are again being collected at the Newman Riga Library. And, feel free to add a note of thanks or a special note conveying your wishes for a most Happy Birthday.
There is no deadline. As cards arrive, they are picked up by a Legion Family Member and dropped off at the VA in Batavia. Pictured below is a small sample of the beautiful, creative and heartwarming cards that have already been delivered.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR PARTICIPATION !!!
FINALLY, IT IS SPRING !!!
And, the daffodils planted by Legion Family Members and Cub Scout Pack 156 are in full bloom.
What better way to usher in spring than with these beautiful flowers that form a "Living Field of Honor" for all veterans?
