Saturday, December 17th, marked Riga’s 3rd year participating in National Wreaths Across America Day. Our events started at Riga cemetery at 11am. Shaun Smith, his daughter Macey & Girl Scout Troop 60487 performed the ceremony here & presented the 8 ceremonial wreaths. Ben Wermuth rounded out the ceremony by playing Taps. At the conclusion, 95 wreaths were laid in honor of the vets buried there, some dating back to the Revolutionary War!
From Riga Cemetery, we moved down to Creekside cemetery for a 12pm ceremony delivered by Harvey C Noone Post 954 Post Commander & retired Army Colonel Ken Juergens. The ceremonial wreaths were presented by active duty military members & Girl Scout Troop 60487. Mae Ennis performed a spectacular rendition of A Soldier’s Christmas Gift that touched the hearts of many in attendance. Taps was played, to conclude this ceremony as well, by Adam Sargent and Robert Wilkinson. At this time 489 wreaths were placed by the many community members who came out. When a volunteer places a wreath on a veteran's grave on National Wreaths Across America Day, we encourage them to speak that veteran's name aloud, thank them for their service and sacrifice, and reflect on that person and their life.
Special thanks to everyone who came out to volunteer, including John Hartman, Steve Brew, cub scouts, Iron Infantry VMC, North Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters, and fellow post members. Words cannot express my gratitude to the entire community for coming together to make this a successful event at both Riga cemeteries.
I would also like to thank our sponsors Mission BBQ, Waste Management and Wegmans.
Mark your calendars now, December 16, 2023!! All wreath purchases made from this link will be matched by Wreaths Across America until January 15, 2023! Help make next year successful! http://wreathsacrossamerica.org/ny0303

The American Legion Auxiliary celebrated the month of May as “Poppy Month”. During the month, Legion Family volunteers distributed poppies in our communities. To assist our youth and their families to understand the story of the poppy in the USA, the Churchville Harvey C. Noone Legion Auxiliary Unit 954 offered a bookmark with the poppy story and held a coloring contest for youth ages 1-16. The Newman Riga Public Library served as a pick-up and drop-off point for the three leveled pages. Others printed off the pages from online to help their children or students participate. We had many excellent entries. We are pleased to announce our winners in three age groups. The first place winner in the Young Patriot group, ages 1-5, is Audrey DeRitis. Third place winner in the Junior Patriot group, ages 6-11, is Zaelyn Musto. Second Place goes to Dakota Beaty, and First Place is Anna Battista. First Place in the Patriot group, ages 12-16 is Sophie Wanck-Kann. Certificates and prizes will be distributed to our winners at the Flag Retirement Ceremony on Flag Day, Tuesday June 14, starting at 7:00 PM at the Post Home, 6444 Buffalo Rd., Churchville, New York. The public is invited to come and participate in this ceremony.
